Recording Vocals At Home

In this new world of making records I tend to get vocals sent to me from an artist that were recorded in their home, (Living Room, Bedroom or Basement). The problem with that is these rooms are not properly treated and the result is you can hear the room in the recording. There are so many reflections in a square room, it's almost impossible to get that hollow sound out. Short of treating your room with diffusors and wall treatments, there are a few things you can do. First off you may won't to consider using a dynamic mic such as a Shure SM7B with a cloud lifter. These mics are more directional and cut back on room reflections creeping in. I know we lean towards the high end condenser microphones, but the detail is so extensive that it will enhance the room reflections coming in as well. Next you may want to add a vocal shield such as the sE Electronics Reflexion Filter X. This will cut down on the amount of vocal escaping into your room. Also adding to much compression to a vocal can be destructive to your recording, catching slight peaks is fine but use compression lightly. The engineers hands are tied if there is too much compression recorded. The last thing to consider is to make sure you have a good pop filter, maybe even two depending on the singers plosives. A little prep goes a long way and gives your mix engineer more freedom to create than fix :) Now go and cut that next hit!!
